Discover Stefano Lubiana wines: New Release 2022

Stefano Lubiana Wines, renowned for their commitment to biodynamic and organic viticulture, have unveiled some exquisite new additions: the 2022 Single Block Pinot Noir and the 2022 Collina Chardonnay. These releases not only showcase the winery's dedication to quality and sustainability but also highlight the unique terroir of Tasmania's Derwent Valley.

2022 Collina Chardonnay: Elegance in a Glass

Steve Lubiana is a perfectionist. In the world of wine, he’s not alone in striving for the best. But even at the extreme, there’s a spectrum. The Stefano Lubiana estate would be perched at the extreme end of that. It is only with exceptional bottlings from the greatest vintages do we get to see Collina Chardonnay. 2022 was such a vintage. A wet winter followed by a warm summer led to a long ripening season and resulted in wines with great brightness and aromatic intensity. Reduced yields enabled the vines to focus its energy on their roots, delving deeper and wider into the soil to absorb more minerals and nutrients.

The 2022 Collina Chardonnay is a standout addition to Stefano Lubiana's portfolio. This Chardonnay is crafted from carefully managed vineyards, ensuring minimal intervention and maximal expression of the vineyard's character. The wine is known for its vibrant fruit profile, balanced acidity, and elegant oak integration, making it a versatile and appealing choice for Chardonnay enthusiasts.

Light golden colour with extremely attractive notes of spice - nutmeg and cinnamon - on the nose, along with stone fruit flavours. The palate is beautifully balanced and poised with a tremendous finish. 96 points. Gold Winner, International Wine Challenge 2024

2022 Single Block Pinot Noir: A Testament to Terroir

The 2022 Single Block Pinot Noir is a remarkable expression of the Derwent Valley's unique terroir. These blocks, with their diverse soils and topography, each bestow a distinct and individual character to the Pinot Noirs they produce. Though a mere 500 meters apart, their differences are profound, creating wines of remarkable shape, texture, and structure. With crop levels meticulously maintained at a low level of 3 to 4 tonnes per hectare or 800g to 1kg per vine, the reduced yields allow the vine to focus its energy to their roots. Delving deeper and wider into the soil to absorb as many minerals and nutrients as the soil provides. The winemaking process remains elegantly simple: 100% whole bunch fermentation with natural yeast, a three-week maceration, and maturation in used French oak for 10 months.

2022 Stefano Lubiana Ruscello Pinot Noir

Translating to ‘small mountain stream’ in Italian, The Ruscello block is located near a little seasonal creek that runs mostly in winter through the middle of the property. This block produces very generous and smooth fruit, everything that is exquisite about Pinot Noir.

From a parcel near a small creek on silt over porous gravelly clay, anise and cinnamon soar alongside the deep scented, sweet, ripe fruit. The palate is lithe, with supple acidity, black, red, and blue berry, cherry, currant, plum fruit, and subtle radicchio and mulch hints. Layered and expansive, warm terra-cotta tannins support. Sensual, with the balance and stature to age well. 95 points. Sarah Ahmed, The World of Fine Wine 2024

2022 Stefano Lubiana La Roccia Pinot Noir

La Roccia, or the ‘rock’ in Italian, is a nod to the main geological feature of this block; a large limestone rock shelf in the middle of the block. Our La Roccia consistently produces wines with the greatest structure and tannin.

A shower of fine, mouth-coating, millefeuille tannins, which cloak and enmesh the fruit, lending gravitas. With time and air, it reveals glimpses of a seam of red cherry/cherrystone, blackcurrant, and blueberry fruit, yet to be mined. Chalky, mineral acidity maintains the flow. Classy oak polishes to a fine sheen. Impressive structure from a hillside block on deep red clay marl over clay, with limestone bedrock. Embryonic. 96+ points.
